To the west of the Skourtis river mouth is Alikes, to the east is Alykanas. The Alikes part is quite slender and in addition quite stony in locations, backed by quite a few bars and restaurants, largely competing to be the least Greek.
The major city was utterly rebuilt and nonetheless has an uncanny resemblance to Venice's San Marco sq.; it's nicely worth having a look at. Zakynthos, as a result of mild winter rainfall, is an extremely lush island; the Venetians referred to it as Il fiore del Levante-- the Flower of the Levant.
Vassilikos - A quiet village in the south east on the Vassilikos penninsula. Read Much more Here there are actually no main motels and simply apartments, villas together with restaurants and tavernas. It has far more of a small village feel to it, has no nightclubs or other entertainment as is the place to look for a more stress-free, quiet vacation. In this space are the turtle nesting seaside of Gerakas and Dafnia.
There's also a "shipwreck", a sunken wooden sailing yacht sitting in quite shallow water which children (and grown-up kids!) can wade out to and climb all over. A stroll of round 1km from Alykanas resort centre, via "Old" Alykanas village, brings you to the peaceful Xehoriati Beach. This slender stretch of fine sand has stunning views throughout to Kefalonia and the Peloponnese, and cabinets out very slowly offering protected swimming with a number of rocky reefs for attention-grabbing snorkelling.

At Cape Skinari on the northern tip of the island - these are probably the most spectacular. There are a number of boats providing journeys from Agios Nikolaos Port, additionally from Makris Gialos Alikes and Alykanas. You can rent a "self-drive" motorboat for the day from from a number of operators in Alykanas to visit the blue caves after which spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the north-east coast on your method back. These caves are also on the itinerary of the large spherical-the-island cruise ships operating out of Zakynthos Town. Zakynthos, like its neighbour Kefalonia, was closely affected by the large earthquake of 1953 and subsequently plenty of its stunning Venetian architecture was sadly destroyed.
Xehoriati is served by 2 eating places vying to have essentially the most incongruous name. There's also a mini-market about 150m from the seaside for snacks, chilled drinks etc.
March-May is a particularly rewarding time to visit; the island is relatively low on tourists, the Easter parade takes place and the island blooms spectacularly with a myriad of colorful flowers and luxurious green hills. There are buses that go between probably the most crowded areas of the island. Ask around and there might be no pain in finding the bus stops. However, bus providers on the island are rather rare and typically unreliable.
